Photography and article illustration

As different types of article can be illustrated in different ways its good to have some ideas about what you are looking to do with a particular article or spread and so how you can illustrate it. One of the things I have discovered this year is that few first time contributors realise the quality of images needed to go with an article and you end up with low res thumbnails.

It is obviously a priority to have articles accompanied by images taken by student photographers, this is not always possible and as it is illegal to use copyrighted images it is worth checking out some of the alternatives. Stock.XCHNG is a free stock photo library and is great for generic images to illustarte articles but it is also worth a browse as you will find a number of seemingly random images which can be used to great effect for design features, such as ink splatters. Image.net is a Getty PR photo library which it is free to sign up to and is perfect for high res PR shots to illustrate interviews and reviews. It doesn't have the easiest navigation but a little knowledge about what you are looking for should help.
